South Lanarkshire Extra (defunct)

The South Lanarkshire Extra was a weekly freesheet tabloid distributed to homes in southern Lanarkshire, including the towns of Hamilton, Wishaw, Larkhall, Blantyre and East Kilbride.

It was originally the Hamilton edition of a tabloid series launched in 1981, the Lanarkshire People. It acquired its own separate identity as the Hamilton People in 1989, and was relaunched as the South Lanarkshire Extra in 2003.

It was latterly published by Johnston Press (Falkirk) Ltd, following their acquisition of the Lanarkshire Extra group of titles from the Archant media group in early 2007.

The group had no website of its own; the link given below is to Johnston’s paid-for weekly tabloid for Lanarkshire, the Lanark Gazette. They shared editorial offices in Lanark.

There were two other newspapers in the group: the North Lanarkshire Extra and the Strathaven Extra. All came out on Thursdays.

The group ceased publication in 2011.
