Medway Extra

The Medway Extra is a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper for the Medway Towns – Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham – and nearby towns and villages in northern Kent, including Strood and Rainham.

It was established in 1983 as the Chatham Extra. It first adopted its present title in 1985, but reverted to the Chatham Extra in 1988. From January to May 1992 it became the Medway Extra again, then simply the Medway edition of the Extra for the next decade before once again becoming the Medway Extra.

It’s published by the KM Group (formerly the Kent Messenger Group) and is a companion to their twice-weekly paid title for the area, the Medway Messenger (which is a local edition of the Kent Messenger). The editorial offices are collocated with the Medway Messenger‘s in Strood, and the Extra shares its website.

It comes out on Fridays. Somewhat more than 10 per cent of the print run is distributed through pickup points. It also used to be available online as an e-edition, but there’s no longer any mention of it on the main Medway Messenger website, to which the dedicated URL at www.medwayepaper.co.uk now simply redirects.
