Waltham Forest Independent

The Waltham Forest Independent is a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper distributed in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, including the suburbs of Walthamstow, Highams Park, Chingford, Leyton and Woodford.

It was founded in 1962 as an offshoot of the Leytonstone Express & Independent. In 1965 it became the Walthamstow, Waltham Forest Independent, then in 1972 it was merged with the Walthamstow, Waltham Forest Guardian & Gazette to become the Walthamstow, Waltham Forest Guardian & Independent. After spending most of the 1980s as the Waltham Forest Extra, the Independent title was revived in 1990 in the Chingford, Walthamstow, Leyton & Leytonstone Independent, and the original Waltham Forest Independent re-emerged a year later.

It’s published by Newsquest (London), and complements the paid-for weekly tabloid newspaper the Waltham Forest Guardian, with which it shares a website as well as editorial staff and offices in Epping.

It comes out on Fridays. An e-edition (free) is also available from the website.
