Gateway Newspapers

Gateway Newspapers Limited is a small independent publisher of three freesheet newspapers covering south and central Essex and bordering parts of eastern Greater London.

It’s based in Billericay, although its company registered office is listed as being in Wickford. It has no separate website; the URL given below is for its Enquirer series of newspapers.

History and recent developments

Gateway Newspapers’ first publication, the Essex Courier weekly freesheet tabloid, was launched in 1998. It was renamed the Essex Enquirer in 2002. Since then it’s been joined by the East London Enquirer and, in February 2011, the Thurrock Enquirer – the latter launch being particularly mordant as the series was by then edited by Neil Speight, who until two years previously had been editor of Newsquest Essex’s Thurrock Gazette.

The company’s listed at Companies House as having been founded in September 2010.
