Widnes World (defunct)

The Widnes World was a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper distributed to households in the town of Widnes in the Borough of Halton in north Cheshire, and Widnes’s satellite villages, including Farnworth, Cronton and Hale.

It was launched in 1980. From 1984 to 1987 it was entitled World in Widnes, Hale and Cronton.

It was published by World Group Newspapers, a branch of Newsquest’s Cheshire/Merseyside division. It was part of a two-title group of newspapers together with the Runcorn World, with which it shared a website.

Although it was a freesheet, a very small fraction of issues were sold through the news trade.

It came out on Wednesdays.

It merged with the Runcorn World in February 2009 to form the Runcorn & Widnes World.
