Salford Advertiser

The Salford Advertiser is a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper distributed to homes in the City of Salford in Greater Manchester, as well as nearby towns such as Eccles, Swinton, Irlam, Pendlebury and Walkden.

It’s published by Greater Manchester Weekly Newspapers, part of MEN Media, the publishers of the Manchester Evening News. MEN Media in turn has been part of Trinity Mirror since March 2010, when they bought it from the Guardian Media Group.

Its origins are convoluted and can be traced back to several different newspapers:

  • The Salford Chronicle, founded in 1868 and thus the Advertiser‘s earliest forerunner
  • The rather charmingly renamed The County Telephone, and Salford District Review, founded 1889; merged with the Chronicle in 1894 to form
  • The Salford Chronicle and Telephone
  • The Pendleton Reporter, Salford, Broughton and Weaste Times, founded in 1879; renamed the Pendleton, Salford, Broughton Reporter in 1884; renamed the Reporter for the County Borough of Salford in 1891; merged with The Salford Chronicle and Telephone in 1926 to form
  • The Salford City Reporter and Salford Chronicle; renamed the Salford City Reporter in 1951;
  • The Advertiser, a multi-edition freesheet launched in 1982; merged with the Salford City Reporter in 1997 to form
  • The Advertiser & Salford City Reporter; renamed the Salford Advertiser in 1999; renamed the Salford Advertiser & Salford City Reporter in 2000; reverted to the Salford Advertiser in 2010.

    The Advertiser‘s main office was in Eccles until May 2009, when MEN consolidated their operations in their headquarters in central Manchester. Following the Trinity Mirror takeover they relocated to Chadderton on the outskirts of Oldham, in September 2010.

    Although it’s mostly a freesheet, a very small number of copies (fewer than two per cent) are sold through the news trade each week.

    It no longer has its own website following the relaunch of the Manchester Evening News‘s website in January 2013; the link below is to the MEN site’s Salford pages.

    It comes out on Thursdays.
