All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

News Guardian

The News Guardian is a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper distributed to households in North Tyneside.

It’s published by Northeast Press, which has been owned by Johnston Press since its acquisition from Portsmouth & Sunderland Newspapers in 1999. Its editorial offices are in Whitley Bay and were shared with the News Post Leader until that title moved to Morpeth in April 2014.

It covers the towns of North Shields, Seaton Delaval, Tynemouth, Wallsend and Whitley Bay in three editions (named for North Shields, Wallsend and Whitley Bay), equating to the three newspapers which merged in 1985 to create the News Guardian:

  • The Whitley Bay Guardian: founded in 1945 as the Weekly Guardian; renamed Whitley Bay and District Weekly Guardian, 1947; amalgamated with the Whitley Seaside Chronicle and Visitors’ Gazette for Whitley, Cullercoats and Tynemouth (founded 1898) to form the Whitley Seaside Chronicle, Whitley Bay and District Weekly Guardian, 1958; renamed the Whitley Seaside Chronicle and Guardian, 1958; renamed the Whitley Bay Guardian, Seaside Chronicle, 1962
  • the Wallsend News, founded in 1954
  • the Shields Weekly News, founded in 1959; merged with the Wallsend News as the Shields and Wallsend Weekly News, 1974; reverted to the Shields Weekly News name, 1975

It comes out on Thursdays.
