All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

South Wales Evening Post

The South Wales Evening Post is an evening tabloid newspaper published in Swansea from Monday to Saturday and which, despite the name, serves South West Wales specifically rather than South Wales in general. Its circulation area includes the Swansea Valley, Llanelli, Carmarthen, Neath and Port Talbot as well as the smaller towns of Kidwelly, Maesteg and Ammanford and the Gower Peninsula.

It was founded in 1893 as the South Wales Daily Post but absorbed an older title, the 1861 foundation The Cambria Daily Leader, in 1930 to become the South Wales Daily Post & Cambria Leader before assuming its current name in 1932. It became Wales’s biggest-selling newspaper in March 2006, overtaking its Cardiff-based rival, the South Wales Echo.

It’s owned by South West Wales Media, part of the Northcliffe Media group, which was the regional and local newspaper publishing arm of the Daily Mail & General Trust until the end of November 2012, when it became the largest constituent part of the new Local World media group.

There are three editions:

  • Swansea Final
  • Neath & Port Talbot
  • Carmarthenshire

As with Northcliffe’s other website/newspaper pairings, the link between the thisissouthwales.co.uk website – now a local portal – and the Evening Post was substantially weakened in 2011, although the newspaper continues to supply news to the site. However, Local World’s decision to give all former Northcliffe titles their own “publisher-branded” site means that the SWEP now has its own URL and website.
