South Wales Argus

The South Wales Argus is a daily tabloid newspaper published in Newport and sold in Newport itself, the county of Monmouthshire (Gwent) and some of the surrounding districts in eastern Glamorgan and southern Powys. It claims to be the largest-selling local paper in South East Wales.

It was founded in 1892 as The South Wales Argus and Monmouthshire Daily Leader, although it lost the Monmouthshire Daily Leader part of the title very early on, in 1896. The initial “The” was lost more recently. It was an evening newspaper printed in Newport up until March 2008, when it switched to morning publication.

It’s currently published by Newsquest (Wales). The main editorial offices are in Newport; there are sub-offices in Chepstow and Pontypool.

There are several special features through the week:

  • Monday: Sport
  • Tuesday: Now and Then (local history and nostalgia)
  • Wednesday: Jobs
  • Thursday: Property; Education
  • Friday: Cars; Entertainment and weekend “what’s on”

There’s also a weekly freesheet tabloid companion for Newport, the Weekly Argus, which was founded over 60 years earlier; and a Campaign series of two other weekly freesheet tabloids for the west of the county, covering Blackwood and Caerphilly.

There are two editions, named “Local” and “Final”.
