The Scotsman
Launched in 1817 in response to the “unblushing subservience” of existing papers to Edinburgh’s establishment, The Scotsman was for many years Scotland’s pre-eminent quality daily newspaper, though in recent years it’s lost ground to The Herald.
It’s a broadsheet. It’s owned by Johnston Press, who are a major force in regional and local newspaper publishing throughout the United Kingdom.
It currently aligns itself with the Scottish Labour Party and takes a strongly pro-Union stance, although some years ago it was a big supporter of devolution.
