All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

Halifax Courier

The Halifax Courier is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the town of Halifax and the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, including the towns of Sowerby Bridge, Ripponden and Elland.

It was founded in 1892 as an evening broadsheet, the Evening Courier, having been preceded by a weekly, the Liberal Party-supporting Halifax Courier. It absorbed a rival newspaper, the Conservative Party-supporting weekly Halifax Guardian, in 1921, at which point its editorial stance became politically independent.

In 1994 its publishers, Halifax Courier Ltd, were taken over by the Johnston Press regional newspaper publishing group.

At the beginning of June 2012 it switched to weekly publication in a move to what Johnston Press described as more “platform-neutral” publishing, with greater emphasis on up-to-date web-based and app-based content, and more in-depth reporting in print. Since then it’s come out on Fridays.

There are three associated local weeklies: the Brighouse Echo, the Hebden Bridge Times and the Todmorden News & Advertiser. (A fourth, the freesheet Calderdale News, ceased publication in mid-2011.)

The editorial offices are in Halifax.
