Tamworth Herald

The Tamworth Herald is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the South East Staffordshire town of Tamworth and its surrounding area, including Atherstone and Coleshill in the district of North Warwickshire.

It’s owned and published by Central Independent Newspapers, which has been part of Northcliffe Media (itself part of the Daily Mail & General Trust) since 1999, when they bought it from the Kent-based Adscene Group (which had only owned CIN since 1996). At the end of 2012 Northcliffe became the major constituent of the new Local World media group.

It was first published in 1868 as the Tamworth Herald and General Advertiser, “a carefully digested epitome of domestic and foreign news … with instructive and humorous literary selections.” The Atherstone Herald was acquired in the 1950s, the Coleshill Chronicle in 1964.

An associated freesheet, the Tamworth Herald Leader, was closed down in 2010, possibly earlier.

There are two local sub-editions: the Atherstone Herald and the Coleshill Herald. All three come out on Thursdays.

As part of a Northcliffe strategy to concentrate its website efforts on developing local portals, the Herald‘s former website at tamworthherald.co.uk was replaced in 2011 by thisistamworth.co.uk, for which the Herald merely contributed news stories. Local World revived the old URL in May 2013 as a consequence of its decision to give former Northcliffe titles their own “publisher-branded” websites, to run alongside the portals.
