Rugeley Mercury (defunct)

The Rugeley Mercury was a local sub-edition of the Staffordshire weekly tabloid freesheet Lichfield Mercury series for the town of Rugeley, including the nearby smaller towns of Etchinghill and Brereton.

It was founded in 1882 as the Rugeley Mercury, Hednesford Courier and Cannock Chronicle, but dropped all but the first two words of the title the following year. Apart from six years from 2002 to 2008 when it merged with the Cannock Chase Mercury as the Cannock & Rugeley Mercury, it kept that title for the rest of its existence.

It was published by Tamworth-based Central Independent Newspapers, which despite the name is part of Northcliffe Media, the regional newspaper division of the Daily Mail & General Trust. It shared the same editorial offices in Lichfield as the rest of the Mercury series.

It had no website of its own; although Central Independent Newspapers owns the rugeleymercury.com domain, the URL redirected to the Cannock news pages of the Lichfield Mercury‘s website. It now redirects to Northcliffe’s lichfieldpeople.co.uk local portal site, even though Rugeley has a portal of its own.

It came out on Thursdays. It ceased publication in late 2010.
