Express & Star
The Express & Star, based in Wolverhampton, is Britain’s largest-selling regional evening newspaper.
It’s one of the very few remaining independently-owned newspapers. Bought by Scottish-born industrialist Andrew Carnegie two years after its 1880 founding as the Evening Star, it merged with its local rival the Evening Express in 1884 and took on its existing name in 1889. Carnegie sold his stake in the paper in 1902, leaving his friend Thomas Graham in overall control. The paper’s remained in the Graham family’s hands ever since.
It appears in no fewer than nine editions, covering:
- Wolverhampton (City Final)
- Birmingham (First)
- Cannock & Lichfield
- Dudley (Late Final)
- Kidderminster (Late Final)
- Sandwell
- Stafford
- Stourbridge (Late Final)
- Walsall
