Birmingham Mail
The Mail (as it’s generally known in Birmingham) was previously known formally as the Birmingham Evening Mail until it lost the Evening from its masthead in a 2005 rebranding. It switched from broadsheet format to tabloid at the same time.
Founded in 1870, it’s currently owned by Midland Evening Newspapers Ltd, which in turn is part of the Trinity Mirror Group, the UK’s biggest newspaper publisher.
Politically it’s neutral; if anything, it could be described as populist.
Its Saturday late sporting edition, the Sports Argus, known affectionately as “the Argus” or “the Pink” (for the colour of paper it was printed on), ceased printing as an independent publication in May 2006 after 109 years, although the name’s been retained; there’s now a 16-page pullout in the Saturday and Monday editions of the Mail called Sports Argus Extra.
