All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

Western Morning News

The Western Morning News is a daily tabloid newspaper sold from Monday to Saturday throughout Devon and Cornwall, as well as in West Somerset and West Dorset.

It was founded in 1860. It’s published by South West Media Group (formerly Westcountry Publications Ltd), which is a subsidiary of the Northcliffe Media regional newspaper group and thus was ultimately part of the Daily Mail & General Trust until Northcliffe became the major constituent of the new Local World media group in November 2012. It’s based in Plymouth.

Up until 1997 it was a broadsheet, but it switched to tabloid format in February of that year.

It appears in a Devon edition and a Cornwall edition. Circulation of the Cornwall edition is more than twice that of the Devon edition.

It publishes an extensive range of supplements:

  • Tuesday: Western Morning Views; Living Cornwall
  • Wednesday: Westcountry Farming; WoMaN
  • Thursday: Westcountry Business
  • Friday: Westcountry Motoring; Westcountry Horses; Out & About
  • Saturday: Westcountry Antiques; Westcountry Property; Weekend

It used to have its own website at www.thisiswesternmorningnews.co.uk, but that URL now redirects to Northcliffe’s thisisdevon.co.uk website. Its news reporting also contributes to Northcliffe’s www.thisiscornwall.co.uk website, along with the Cornish Guardian, The Cornishman and The West Briton.

However, in April 2013 Local World announced that it would be creating “publisher-branded” websites for all of its newspapers, to run alongside the “thisis…” and “…people” local portals. The News was one of the first seven to receive one of these websites, at westernmorningnews.co.uk.
