Medway News (defunct)

The Medway News was a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the three “Medway Towns” – Gillingham, Chatham and Rochester – and other towns and villages in surrounding parts of North Kent at the Medway estuary, including Snodland, Strood, Cliffe Woods and Hoo St Werburgh.

It was founded in 1859 as The Chatham News, but expanded both its title and its distribution area to become first the Chatham & Rochester News in 1885, then the Chatham, Rochester & Gillingham News in 1903. In 1989 it became the News – Chatham, Rochester, Gillingham, before adopting the title Medway News in 1993.

Latterly it was published by Kent Regional News and Media (KRN), a division of Northcliffe Media, which is the regional newspaper publishing arm of the Daily Mail & General Trust. The editorial offices were in Chatham.

It had no website of its own; the link below is to the KRN/Courier Media Group’s thisiskent.co.uk website.

It came out on Fridays.

On 25 November 2011 Northcliffe Media announced the likely closure of the Medway News in early December, following the failure of its proposed sale of KRN to the KM Group. The News duly closed a couple of weeks later.
