Maidstone Extra

The Maidstone Extra is a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper for the county town of Kent, Maidstone, and surrounding villages in central Kent to a radius of about four miles.

It was launched in 1971 as the Maidstone Times. In 1982 it was renamed the Maidstone Times & Gazette, then the Maidstone Extra in 1983. Between 1984 and 1992 it had an expanded title: first as the Maidstone & Weald Extra until 1987, then as the Maidstone, Malling & Weald Extra.

It’s published by the KM Group (the erstwhile Kent Messenger Group) as a sister title for their paid-for weekly title for the area, the Maidstone edition of the Kent Messenger, whose editorial offices and website it shares.

Although most of the print run is delivered direct to homes, just over 10 per cent of issues are available through pickup points at supermarkets and by brand-to-hand distribution.

It comes out on Fridays. Until recently it was also available online as an e-edition, but the dedicated site for the e-edition at www.maidstoneepaper.co.uk has now been withdrawn.
