Westmorland Gazette

The Westmorland Gazette is a weekly broadsheet newspaper sold in the Lake District, including most of the historic county of Westmorland and Furness, and the northern extremities of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

It was founded in the early 19th century. It’s had literary associations from the outset: the poet William Wordsworth was one of the early backers and nearly became editor at one stage, but stood aside in favour of Thomas de Quincey, author of Confessions of an Opium Eater. In later years both John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter wrote letters to the newspaper.

It’s published by Newsquest Kendal, which is also where the editorial offices are.
