Stockport Express

The Stockport Express is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the town of Stockport (now in Greater Manchester) and the neighbouring towns, such as Cheadle, Hazel Grove and Poynton just across the county boundary in Cheshire.

It’s published by the Greater Manchester Weekly Newspaper Group, part of MEN Media, which itself became part of Trinity Mirror when they bought it from the Guardian Media Group in March 2010. The editorial offices have been consolidated with MEN’s other titles’ offices since May 2009; first in central Manchester, then from September 2010 in Chadderton on the outskirts of Oldham. Since January 2013 the website has likewise been consolidated, with that of the Manchester Evening News.

It was founded in 1889 as the Stockport County Borough Express, but adopted its present name in 1927 – for the first time. In 1953 it became the Stockport Express and East Cheshire Observer (a year after the Macclesfield Times had dropped the East Cheshire Observer from its title, having borne it since 1913). Just two year later it in turn dropped the Observer and became the Stockport Express and County Express.

In 1959 the Express lost the name of Stockport from the masthead altogether, becoming just the Stockport edition of the County Express, a series of newspapers covering Manchester and its southern (Cheshire) suburbs. However, in 1960 it was renamed the Stockport County Express. It also started a series of local editions covering Stockport itself as well as Bramhall; Cheadle and Gatley; and Bredbury, Romiley, Marple and Disley. The series reverted to the Stockport Express title in 1965.

In 1981 the Express amalgamated with the Stockport Advertiser (founded in 1822 as the Stockport Advertiser, and Cheshire, Lancashire, and Derbyshire Weekly Journal; entitled the Stockport Advertiser and Guardian from 1879 to 1969) and became the Stockport Express Advertiser. The Advertiser lasted in the title until 1997.

It was Community Newspaper of the Year in 1999.

It comes out on Wednesdays. It has a sister freesheet newspaper: the Stockport Times.
