Manchester Evening News
Founded by would-be Liberal MP Mitchell Henry to support his (unsuccessful) 1868 General Election campaign, the Manchester Evening News was sold to John Edward Taylor, son of the owner-founder of the Manchester Guardian, shortly after the election. The two papers were once again separated in 1907 at Taylor’s death, but the Guardian bought the News in the 1920s and has held the paper ever since.
Its stance is on the political Left, with a populist slant.
It’s tabloid in format. It began publication of a morning edition in 2004, a move which almost resulted in a strike at its print works.
Its Pink Final edition on Saturday, covering football results, was discontinued in 2000.
