Shields Gazette
The Shields Gazette is the United Kingdom’s oldest regional evening newspaper. It was founded in 1849 as a weekly under the name the North and South Shields Gazette, but switched to evening publication on the lifting of stamp duty in 1855.
It’s published by Northeast Press Ltd (part of Johnston Press) from their South Shields office. Prior to the Johnston Press takeover in 1999, it had been part of Portsmouth & Sunderland Newspapers for seven years.
It’s a tabloid. There are two editions: the Jarrow & Hebburn edition and the Final.
Its two sister papers in the Northeast Press setup are the News Guardian and the Sunderland Echo (on whose presses it’s printed).
