Chronicle eXTRA – Gateshead (defunct)

The Chronicle eXTRA – Gateshead was a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper distributed to households in the Tyneside town of Gateshead and to nearby towns and villages in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, including the towns of Whickham, Birtley and Felling.

It was founded in 1988 as the Gateshead Herald & Post, part of a companion series to the evening tabloid for the North East of England, the Evening Chronicle, published by Trinity Mirror‘s NCJ Media subsidiary. (There were earlier titles called the Gateshead Labour Herald (1919-47) and the Gateshead Post (1939-1998), but these are unrelated.)

The series was relaunched in 2007 as the Chronicle eXTRA series. In its heyday there were seven editions, but five of them closed in late 2008 and July 2009, leaving only the Gateshead and Newcastle editions. They both ceased publication in early 2012.

The Chronicle eXTRA series newspapers had no websites of their own; the link below is to the Evening Chronicle’s website. The editorial offices were in Newcastle upon Tyne.

It came out on Wednesdays.
