Southwark News

The Southwark News is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the London Borough of Southwark, taking in the districts of Bermondsey, Blackfriars, Borough, Camberwell, Dulwich Village, East Dulwich, Elephant & Castle, Honor Oak, Nunhead, Old Kent Road, Peckham, Rotherhithe, Walworth and part of Kennington and Herne Hill.

As of 2009 it’s London’s only independent paid-for weekly newspaper; it’s published by Southwark Newspaper Ltd. It started life in 1987 under journalist Dave Clark as a fortnightly A4-format photocopied publication called the Bermondsey News. It rapidly expanded into a magazine format, and then a tabloid in 1989. In the early 1990s it became the Southwark & Bermondsey News and increased frequency to weekly publication before settling on the present title in 1993.

Following Clark’s untimely death of stomach cancer in 1998, the newspaper continued as a fortnightly publication for a short time until fresh investment could be found. It reverted to weekly publication in 1999. A buy-out by its editors Kevin Quinn and Chris Mullany and a third partner, David Ellis, in 2002 put the paper on a firm footing for the foreseeable future.

It has a local sub-edition for Dulwich and Herne Hill; and a partner monthly freesheet, the Southwark Weekender.

It comes out on Thursdays.
