All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

The London Gazette

The London Gazette is the Official Newspaper of Record for the United Kingdom, issued on working days. Despite the title, it’s not like most newspapers as its content consists of legal and official announcements from HM Government, the Armed Forces, local authorities, the Established Churches, companies and private citizens.

It was founded in 1665 as the Oxford Gazette – King Charles II having shifted his court there temporarily to escape the Great Plague in London – and was renamed The London Gazette upon the court’s return to London a few months later. The editorial offices moved in July 2013 from London to Norwich.

It was originally published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, then—following privatisation in the 1990s—by TSO on behalf of HMSO. It’s currently published by TSO “under the superintendence” of HMSO, part of The National Archives.

Besides being the Official Newspaper of Record for the UK, it fills the same function for England & Wales; The Edinburgh Gazette and The Belfast Gazette perform the same role for Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively. All now share a common website under the overarching brand The Gazette.

E-editions in PDF file format are available free online. Archived editions are also available and can be searched by date or keyword. From time to time excerpts relating to historic events are highlighted – for instance, in May 2013 the Gazette bore a link to the citations for the Dambusters raid 70 years earlier.
