Gainsborough Standard
The Gainsborough Standard is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in and around the town of Gainsborough in West Lindsey, including north-western Lincolnshire as far afield as Hemswell to the east and the outskirts of Scunthorpe in the north, and north-eastern Nottinghamshire almost as far as Bawtry to the west and Retford to the south-west.
Its origins go back to the Retford, Worksop, Isle of Axholme and Gainsborough News, first published in 1855 with the abolition of stamp duty on newspapers. It was twice-weekly for over a century from 1877 to 1988 and came out on Tuesdays and Fridays; in 1988 the Friday edition became the Gainsborough Standard. The Gainsborough News became the Standard‘s freesheet companion before ceasing publication in 2012.
It’s published by Doncaster-based South Yorkshire Newspapers, part of Johnston Press, from editorial offices in Gainsborough.
The publication day switched from Friday to Thursday in 2002.
